The Pool Boy's Beatitude by DJ Swykert

The Pool Boy's Beatitude by DJ Swykert

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Jack Joseph understands physics. He understands the nature of quarks, leptons, dark matter and the desire to find the God particle. What Jack doesn’t understand is Jack. He has a Masters’s degree in particle physics, an ex-wife, a sugar mama into spanking, a passion for cooking and chronic dependencies he needs to feed. He cleans pools to maintain this chaotic lifestyle. Spinning about in a Large Hadron Collider of his own making, facing a jail term, the particle known as Jack is about to collide with a particle known as Sarah. The Pool Boy’s Beatitude convincingly portrays a life of romance, addiction, and entropy, filled with the temptations of drink, drugs, and sex, broken with the miseries of ruined relationships, and balanced on the needle of false hope. Somehow through it, all the story is hopeful, positive, humorous and oddly enticing. The question is not so much will Jack survive as how will he survive, because surely, behind all this science, there has to be a truth worth living for. A thinking readers' romance novel, The Pool Boy’s Beatitude creates a character you long to hate and makes you love him.

I stepped inside and Rosemary flipped the door shut. As I turned around I found myself being embraced. I could smell the Amaretto on her breath, her favorite drink. She probably hadn’t been up long but I’m guessing was already into a second glass. Rosemary was a very comely forty plus woman, age and brassiere size being an approximate match. She leaned further into my face and I added the taste of the Amaretto to my sensual perceptions as she kissed me, with tongue. “I’ve been thinking about you all morning,” she said.                “You haven’t been up all morning.”              “Okay, so it was late morning, maybe afternoon,” Rosemary said, without slipping out of the embrace. “But I am glad to see you, and I have been thinking about you since I got up.”              “I’m going to need you to open the gate,” I said, not sure, even with my liquid lunch settled in my stomach, if I was quite ready for a bout with Rosemary.              “It’s early afternoon, Ben won’t be home for hours.”              “I don’t need Ben to help me with the pool.”                 “Smart ass.”              I smirked. “Yeah, I am.”               “Do you love me?”              I scrunched up my nose and without angst told her, “Love is for your husband, lust is for us. And don’t think lust can’t be a thing of beauty, because it can be. It can be better than love. You love your children, your grandchildren, your dog, the cat, your husband, your house, but you lust for me and I lust for you. And truthfully, I’d much rather have your lust than your love, it’s a lot more fun.”              Rosemary let go of me and stepped back an inch or two. “You mean you don’t love me? Not even a little? I know you feel something for me. You keep coming back to me. And I know how I feel about you. Couldn’t this be love?”              I smirked. “It could be, if there is such a thing.”  “I believe in love. I don’t want to just get off,” she said. But then gave me a sly smile and winked. “But I do want to get off, too, and bad, very bad.”              Here I was again, standing at the threshold. I could step forward into the pleasure that surely I would feel with Rosemary. She was attractive and energetic. If sex was an  Olympic event she’d have a trophy case full of gold medals. I’ve already broken one promise today, my liquid lunch with Jim at the Frog Lounge. One part of me said, you didn’t promise her you’d be faithful, just straight, and you’ve already broken that promise, what’s one more? On the other hand, just because I made one tiny slip doesn’t mean I should jump face first into a black hole of broken promises.               I was taught I have free will. I was born not by my own choosing, but by another’s. I am issued the qualities of my being, my looks, physicality and brains, by someone the church said lives beyond the clouds. I am not a being of my own choosing, but am free to make choices for myself. I choose to believe life has but one outcome, eternal dark; nothingness, you can’t bring anything of this life into the next life because there isn’t one. This fatalism makes me invincible, indestructible, as there is nothing to fear in life as it is only temporary and uncertain. Believing this is the key to my freedom, my independence from rules, from laws, particularly those of men.               I looked at Rosemary, beautiful, wanting, and I gave into her needs, and my own.   The lovemaking was ferocious. We clung to one another and embraced and clenched each other’s bodies and nerve endings into the paradise of this unknown god, for if he created a paradise it was here on earth, and was within the body of this loving woman. We are good together; we blend together like entangled particles, inseparable for this moment. We both screamed a little when our own Big Bang occurred.              “You sure you don’t love me, just a little?” Rosemary asked, strumming the dark hairs on my stomach with her finger. “That was very special for me. That wasn’t sex.”              “It’s not sex, Rosemary, it’s fucking. I’ll give you that much. And there is a difference. You have sex with a cold unresponsive wife, or a hooker, or your best boy, with a surrogate to make children or whatever else you’re into, but fucking, well, you fuck someone you have passion for. I have passion for you. But I don’t love you.”                  Rosemary laid her head on my chest and continued to twirl her finger on my stomach.             “Well, that wasn’t sex, or fucking, when you come that hard it’s love, that’s my definition. I’ve had plenty of sex, fucking, I’m older than you. But I’ve never come that hard, or that fast. That makes it special. And love is special, Jack. It’s something special between two people. I don’t mind that you don’t feel you love me, but I mind that you don’t believe there is such a thing as love, because there is, and someday you will believe  in it.”              She is trying to convince me with logic, prove her love theorem using her intelligence. For some reason I found this adorable, touching, likeable, and I found in a small way it changed my feeling towards Rosemary a little, made it better, better than it was with my wife Elle. But then Rosemary and I were more alike than Elle and me. With Elle it was always her head and her looks, with Rosemary it has never been anything but, well, fucking. It was better than just sex, but was only fucking. “It can be whatever you want it to be, Rosemary,” I said, kissing the top of her head. “You want love, it can be love. But don’t ask me what it is. Just let it be whatever it feels like to you, and if it feels like love, then it is. Everything in the universe is only a perception. How it looks or feels to you is how it is. I believe in separate realities, separate and distinct realities exist for everyone, that’s what is real.”              Rosemary lifted her head up and gave me a screwy look. “I have no idea what all that’s about. I know what I feel--it’s simple, it’s easy, it’s natural. It comes to me as easy as breathing. How much did you have to drink before you got here?”              “Not enough.”              “Let me get you one, then,” Rosemary said, and bounced up off the bed.              “I’ve got to get going.”                 “Where?”              She made me think: yeah, where?  Elle wasn’t home. I was done for the day. And there was plenty of free bourbon at Rosemary’s.               “My husband won’t be home for hours. Let’s party a little. C’mon, pool man, pool boy, physicist, hang out for a while and explain the stars to me.”               “Bourbon, big glass, no ice.”

A MAN’S LATE NIGHT THOUGHTS

Pump Up Your Book is pleased to bring you J. Richman’s A MAN’S LATE NIGHT THOUGHTS Virtual Book Tour March 2 – May 29!

Title: A MAN’S LATE NIGHT THOUGHTS

Author: J. Richman

Publisher: Dorrance Publishing Company

Pages: 356

Genre: Memoir/Narrative

BOOK BLURB: A MAN’S LATE NIGHT THOUGHTS by J. Richman is a creative and life-affirming collection of ponderings that expose the deep thoughts and feelings of a man who has lived a life full of diverse experiences and challenges. This uniquely constructed compilation of more than 300 reflections focuses on several areas of living, including intimate relationships and acceptance of human frailty, as well as the author’s internal conflicts. A MAN’S LATE NIGHT THOUGHTS homes in on the complications inherent in intimate relationships from the opening pages of the book: “Problems accrue when we confuse how a woman looks with who she is.” Richman brings the perspective of a mature man to the lessons on love presented in the book, including, “Exploitation of another depreciates both parties,” and “The reason we fall in love with flawed people is that that’s the only kind of people there are.” In addition to offering a brief study of intimate relationships, A MAN’S LATE NIGHT THOUGHTS probes human frailty and offers readers guidance in accepting this fact. “We must learn to be strong enough to be gentle,” brings into focus the need to deliberately work at treating people well. The author also encourages readers to show self-compassion when dealing with their own baggage: “Sometimes it’s difficult to see beyond the wreckage of our lives, but we must! Take heart! We are more than our mistakes.” In A MAN’S LATE NIGHT THOUGHTS, Richman further challenges readers to take the reins of their lives when he says, “Name those things that you would do if you had no fear then do something about it.” He offers words of caution regarding political rhetoric: “Beware of politicians who whip up emotions to make us suspicious of others unlike us.” And rounds the book out by sharing his internal conflicts: “The world has bent me more than I have bent it”; “too often my logical mind and my emotional mind are hostile enemies”; “every time I look in the mirror, I expect to see a younger man.” A MAN’S LATE NIGHT THOUGHTS began as a series of notes that Richman wrote to himself. “I found that if I do not write out my true, and often painful, thoughts and feelings, I do not deal with them.” Richman wishes a book like this one had been available when he was a boy because the knowledge enclosed could have assisted him in navigating his teenage and young adult years. He hopes A MAN’S LATE NIGHT THOUGHTS will assure men that they are not alone in their quiet musings. For women, Richman believes the book will provide a window into men’s unexpressed emotions.

My Review

"I don't live each day as my last as I would soon starve."

Richman's thought-provoking questions/statements keep the reader flipping the pages even well past 10! You can tell how the time and effort making this book is well seen. I loved journaling my feelings into each section while exploring and learning the what-ifs, the possible, and the lessons. The book was a hardcover and it had nice binding which I appreciated. I also liked how the author included extra blank back pages for notes. The book is perfect for a hand me down, your family and friends would love to read and write inside. There was only one problem. There were a lot of editing mistakes that I didn't know if intentional or not, but I had trouble understanding some of the words (aka typo words).

All in all, a great read, it really inspired my inner soul. It speaks out for the politicians, the homeless, the lovers, etc. Very life-changing, I would highly recommend this. My rating? 5 stars!

My Review

Trust is something we human beings rely on every single day. This book does a great way of portraying that theme along with it's characters and the plot. The action is intense and dramatic with emotional detailing on the sides. Counting on Trust has a great concept but I think it should have dealt more with the ending. Other than that, the audiobook was very fun to listen to. I loved the way they switched voices for each character. That was a neat idea. I would like to learn more about Powers' writing process. She has a interesting way with the introduction. Believe me, it drives you straight in! All in all, my rating for this audiobook is 4 stars!

My Review

Notes to My Son faces 25 life lessons head on, each one filled to the brim with vital information. Learn how to make success a habit and compare risks with rewards. Lynn teaches wise words, education, and basic knowledge. Every child is still growing, so, it is relevant to use Lynn's advice for your child's facts and feelings. I loved the detail of the book as well as the tone. What I would like to see more of is an entire section dedicated to qoutes and whatnot. For me, it was the qoutes were quite distracting. I also wished that Lynn would have used some more easier to undertand vocab. Mostly because I don't really see the point of using those fancy-smancy words.  But, that's ok! Financial commitment strategies along with interest and how to ignore money scams proved useful and enjoyable. These short, complex and inspiring tactics made me think! So, all in all, my rating is 4 hearts.

Virtual Excerpt Tour for Gouster Girl by David E. Gumpert

Gouster Girl by David E. Gumpert

GENRE: YA, Young Adult

BLURB: Gouster Girl is the coming of age, risky affair between Valerie Davis a cute black girl from the South Side of Chicago and nerdy white Jeffrey Stark. While the two are somewhat smitten they are late to realize that falling in love on Chicago’s South Side in 1963 is a highly risky business for an interracial couple. Opportunities arise for both of them to help one another out of tough fixes—he saves her from attack at an all-white amusement park and she saves him from injury in a racial brawl at their high school. But as their romance becomes more serious, so do the racial dangers. White police target Valerie as a prostitute and black gang members see Jeffrey as trying to sexually exploit a black girl. Seemingly inevitably, the blossoming romance collides head on with the realities of Northern-style racism one hot summer afternoon at one of Chicago’s most beautiful Lake Michigan beaches, when a racial protest turns ugly, confronting the couple with terrible choices.

EXCERPTS (Exclusive Excerpt): As lunch ended, and I went to my afternoon classes, the events on the stairs with Booker churned in my mind, including how differently things could have turned out if Valerie hadn’t come to my rescue—that I might be a few blocks away, at the University of Chicago’s Lying-In Hospital on 59th Street, fighting for my life. I hoped the lunchtime congrats from upper classmen were the end of the gossip. Moreover, I was still uncertain about all that transpired, and why. I was so intent on leaving the scene of the encounter as quickly as I could, I didn’t notice interactions between Booker and Valerie, or between her and others, after I departed. All I knew was what I had seen of her at Riverview at the end of summer, and during our brief and tentative interactions at the basketball game and after geometry class. Could she and Booker be related? That was the only reason I could imagine for the rapid-fire chain of events that saved me—her command to him and his decision to obey it. Otherwise, their interaction didn’t make any sense. In the school’s three-tier social order, Booker, by virtue of being a gouster, was at the bottom rung academically and economically. She? Valerie was definitely in the middle tier, an “Ivy Leaguer.” She mostly dressed the way she did that Tuesday—plain white blouse, V-neck sweater, plaid skirt, white bobby socks, and flat black loafers. Gouster girls wore the white blouses, but generally avoided the sweaters, plaid dresses, and bobby socks of Ivy Leaguers in favor of black dresses and nylon stockings. I didn’t want to think about another possibility—that Ivy Leaguer Valerie could be dating gouster Booker. I don’t know exactly why, but that seemed improbable—even more improbable than the possibility that a white guy like me could be dating Valerie. Smart Negro girls like Valerie didn’t have time for losers like Booker. Or so I assumed. “I don’t know what we are going to do about this neighborhood,” Dad said, shaking his head. Now it was Mom’s turn. “It isn’t going to get any better, Kurt. I heard at the office today that schvartzes are moving in on Paxton and Crandon.” Those were streets immediately east of us in our area of South Shore, toward Lake Michigan. Since our neighborhoods had been changing racially from west to east, the news that Negroes were moving in east of us suggested we and the other remaining whites on our block were becoming more surrounded, more isolated. “Each day, someone seems to be leaving. This morning, it was Edith Murphy on the first floor. You know, the widow with the two little children. I just happened to see the moving truck as I was going out about eleven. She never said anything, even though we used to talk in the building, or when we were out shopping. It only took them an hour or so to load her things up. And then she was gone. And you watch. Tomorrow or the next day, a big schvartze family will move in.” Emily and I looked knowingly at each other. I was sure she felt as deflated as I did, because we had heard this conversation from our parents more often than we liked to think about. Emily at 12 was more effusive and gregarious than me, taking after our mother. She looked a lot like our mother as well, with a small nose set on a small pleasingly round face, highlighted by sparkling brown eyes and barely shoulder-length curly black hair. I knew from talking with Emily alone that, like me, she was experiencing racial tension at the O’Keefe School, the local elementary school a couple blocks away. She was in the seventh grade, just about the age where the tough Negro kids began asserting themselves. The dinnertime conversation was yet another reminder of how significantly our living situation had deteriorated over the past three years. When we moved to this apartment on Clyde in time for me to start as a freshman at Parkview, the neighborhood had been all white and the expectation had been that we’d be able to live here at least four years without racial upheaval, in time for me to graduate Hyde Park High and Emily to graduate O’Keefe. If things had stabilized racially, Emily might even have gone to Hyde Park, or at least started in there as a freshman. I tried an upbeat approach with Mom and Dad as we poked with our spoons at the plain red Jell-O that completed our dinner. “We played dodge ball in gym,” I offered. “I was the winner because I was the last kid standing.” Neither of them said anything as they began clearing the dishes, as if they were lost in their own sea of anxiety. I excused myself to do homework in my room. I loved my room. It was large and airy, with a single bed and an old beat-up wooden desk, but what I liked most about it was that it was private. I even had my own bathroom.

AUTHOR Bio and Links: David E. Gumpert grew up on the South Side of Chicago, in South Shore and Hyde Park. In the years since graduating from the University of Chicago, he has attended Columbia Journalism School and worked as a reporter for The Wall Street Journal and an editor for the Harvard Business Review and Inc. magazine. He has also authored ten nonfiction books on a variety of subjects—from entrepreneurship and small business management to food politics. His most prominent titles include How to Really Create a Successful Business Plan (from Inc. Publishing); How to Really Start Your Own Business (Inc. Publishing); Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Food Rights (Chelsea Green Publishing), and The Raw Milk Answer Book (Lauson Publishing). He spent ten years in the 1990s and early 2000s researching his family's history during the Holocaust. The result was a book co-authored with his deceased aunt Inge Belier: Inge: A Girl’s Journey Through Nazi Europe (Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing). He spent much of the last half-dozen years going back to his own roots in Chicago to research and write the historical novel, Gouster Girl. While some of it stems from his own experiences growing up in South Shore and Hyde Park, he also conducted significant additional research to complete the book in late 2019.

My Review:

For someone who was Chicago-bred, this book puts a lot of detail into the setting. The plot includes experiences with racial violence and tension to block the two young lovers' love but fails nevertheless. As we have learned from history class, back in the 1960s, it was a tough time period for both races alike. Their romance blooming without permission causes risks and sacrifice. I felt the pain along with each character and wished the author would have included different perspectives instead of just doing Jeff's. The story was also, sadly, slow and uninteresting. For someone who is really into black history, I wanted more than just a coming of age story. I loved the idea of a forbidden, corupted romance though but the execution wasn't right. I'm a girl, so, I guess that's why? I dunno about that, but overall, a great, dramatic read. It will make you cry, laugh, and cheer for their triumphs, goals, and more.

I'll leave off with a rating:

❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

When a position at a country club is offered to Roxy, she finds herself rethinking her entire business plan. Excited to start someplace new, Roxy and Henley begin making plans for the future. Just after she starts her new job, Roxy learns of Lee’s past relationship, and everything she knew about him is questioned.

Can Roxy and Henley put the past to bed and move forward to something that might be more than what both of them had ever hoped for? The Loving A Young Series is about a family of six siblings finding love in today’s world.

Wesley, Book 1 and Henley, Book 2 will soon be joined with Huntley, Riley, Bradley and Kayley.

Excerpt

Nothing hurt quite like the sharp beak of a phoenix jabbed straight into my scalp. I growled a curse as I leapt up into a sitting position on my bed. Was I bleeding? I ran a shaky hand through my disheveled black hair and flinched when I grazed the tiny puncture wound. Some blood, but not much. “Good morning, Volke,” the phoenix said, his voice chipper. I took a deep breath. “Hello, Forsythe.” “My arcanist wanted to know if you were ready to train.” “Yeah. Just give me a moment.” The stinging pain removed all grogginess. I couldn’t go back to sleep now, even if I wanted to. After another deep breath, I peered through the open window. The sun had yet to rise. The purple hue of the sky, dotted with a handful of stars, meant we still had an hour before dawn. “He’s already awake?” I asked. “He’s been determined to work hard ever since he escaped Calisto’s pirate ship.” Forsythe tilted his head from side to side. “And you did say you would train with him whenever he asked.” Although it was dark outside, Forsythe illuminated my room. A gentle glow radiated from beneath his scarlet feathers, like his body was made of flame. The rest of him resembled a large heron with delicate features, including a long neck and a pointed beak. His gold eyes stayed fixed on me as I flung my legs over the side of the bed. I loved phoenixes, but every time they moved around, soot fell from the smolder of fire hidden beneath their feathers. A trail of it led from the windowsill to my bed.

Scary Hippopotamus Books

Summary:
On the battlefield of dreams, the strongest weapons are imagination --- and love.

Ashlyn Revere is a bright, determined and resourceful college graduate trying to get a job in publishing. When Ashlyn and her sister Penny are left comatose after an automobile accident, they find themselves in Summervale, a beautiful and perilous realm straight from the pages of fantasy novels --- which is ruled by a mysterious Dark Lord.
When Ashlyn discovers that Penny is being held captive, she enlists the help of a talking black rabbit and a scarlet knight to save her sister. She learns that Penny is deep within her own fantasy of Regency romance --- and that she sees being in a coma as a way to escape from her daily struggles with cystic fibrosis. Ashlyn tries to rescue her anyway, but a fire-breathing dragon and a real-world seizure complicate her plans.
As Penny recovers from her injuries and leaves Summervale, Ashlyn is rescued by a servant of the Dark Lord who promises to show her just how precarious her own medical situation is. In the real world, Ashlyn’s medical condition has worsened, forcing her doctors to consider risky surgery. Ashlyn rejects an offer from the Dark Lord to remain in Summervale forever, and chooses to raise an army of knights to fight for her freedom and independence.
Penny must face a choice of her own. As Ashlyn hovers between life and death, Penny learns that Ashlyn would be a good match to provide the donor set of lungs that Penny needs to free her from the constraints of cystic fibrosis.
As doctors battle to save Ashlyn’s life, she leads her forces against the Dark Lord in a desperate conflict in the streets of an imaginary Manhattan --- while Penny must find the answer to her own destiny in a dying circle of firelight. Can the sisters rescue themselves—and each other?
A CIRCLE OF FIRELIGHT blends postmodern fantasy and real-world emotional conflict in a daring tale that will delight adult and young adult readers alike.

Advance Praise:

"What Edmonds does especially well is to sprinkle fantasy and pop-culture references throughout, making the volume accessible even to readers who aren’t genre fans. What results is a charming tale that allows every reader to smile knowingly. A sturdy, well-crafted, and vibrant fantasy."

- Kirkus Reviews

"The execution is for the most part charming and clever, with lively dialogue, easy pacing, and fleshed-out protagonists... Edmonds’s novel evokes the magic of portal fantasies while grounding it with emotionally resonant relationships."

EXCERPT:

ASHLYN REVERE. Age, 23. Pisces. Recent graduate, University of North Carolina. Currently seeking her first job, preferably as an editorial assistant for a large New York publishing house. Ashlyn was born in central New Jersey, and graduated from high school there. When she was five years old, her younger sister was born with cystic fibrosis, a serious genetic disorder that results in the build-up of thick, ropy mucus in the lungs. Throughout her life, Ashlyn has had to play a significant role in her sister’s care—which she has often resented. Ashlyn worked hard in high school to develop as an athlete, primarily to earn a scholarship to an out-of-state college. She studied English at North Carolina, and starred on the field hockey team until a mysterious injury knocked her out in the first game of her senior year. Ashlyn is tall and pale, with ash-blonde hair that she wears in a utilitarian ponytail. She has attractive, regular features, but no one would ever describe her as pretty. In her junior year, she dated a senior at UNC—but he dumped her after he was accepted to Stanford Law School. She has dated occasionally, but draws the line at jerks and Duke students. Ashlyn is a lifelong fan of fantasy literature, thanks in part to the influence of her father. Ashlyn tore through the Harry Potter books at a young age, and then started working through her father’s collection of vintage fantasy paperbacks. She wrote her senior thesis at UNC on similarities in theme between Ursula LeGuin’s novels and Virginia Woolf’s short stories. As the novel opens, Ashlyn has returned to New Jersey and is temporarily back in her childhood bedroom, looking for the job opening that will guarantee her independence. PENELOPE “PENNY” REVERE. Age 18. Taurus. Preparing for her senior year of high school—except that she will be home-schooled yet again due to her cystic fibrosis. She has logged significant time in children’s hospitals in Morristown, Philadelphia, and Cincinnati. She is currently number 37 on the nationwide lung transplant list. If she does not receive a lung transplant, she is likely to die before age 40. As a CF patient, she is under the constant risk of infection. While she has attended school at times, she has spent most of her young life either at home or in hospitals. She is very close to her older sister Ashlyn and her two younger brothers. She is an inveterate reader of both classic romantic fiction and modern bodice-rippers. Unlike Ashlyn, who is somewhat reserved, Penny is a classic extrovert. She is talkative, and often sarcastic. She is a huge fan of the “Hamilton” soundtrack, and her dearest wish is to see the play in person. She has strong negative opinions about doctors and health care in general, and has been caught several times sneaking out of hospitals to get snacks. She does not know when to keep her mouth shut. ANDREW “DREW” KINGMAN, M.D. Age 31. Sagittarius. Assistant Professor of Neurology, Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Graduate of Louisiana State University and the University of Nebraska Medical School. Completed residency at Emory University in Atlanta, where he became a loyal Atlanta Braves fan. After residency, Dr. Kingman got a job at the Robert Wood Johnson hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey, working primarily as a clinician but also teaching at the medical school. He was consulted to care for Ashlyn and Penny following a car accident that left them both with severe head injuries. Dr. Kingman is from rural southern Louisiana. His home was devastated during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, as he was preparing to enter LSU. He has not returned to Louisiana since graduation except for short visits, and has worked to correct his accent (although he still enjoys cooking Cajun specialties). He is devoted to his patients, to the point of affecting his home life. He is single and feels as though he is too busy for a relationship. He is shorter than average, with a slight build and would almost be handsome except for the dark circles under his eyes. NICHOLAS. Age: indeterminate. Talking Rabbit. Ashlyn’s mentor and guide through the dangers of Summervale. Arch sense of humor, BBC Received English accent. Not somebody to mess with. T.J. VALENTINE. Age: indeterminate. Bad boy, standing in the shadows. Regional manager for the Dark Side. Rides with Ashlyn in the climatic battle that will shape the destiny of Summervale. Fond of leather coats.

Excerpt #1

They call her a doll; porcelain and perfect by design. Yet she knows what they truly think—she’s a doll; a fragile toy easily left behind. a skeleton of love between. doors long closed, splayed keys and rusted things. the unbecoming love reversing hearts into strangers. I dumped my love into dirt holes hoping to plant a tree but what grew were brittle twigs and sad, unwanted weeds all along I simply thought it was just me that my love grew into pointless things it’s when I walked between the verdant trees admiring their grandeur and what I wished to be that the stones rattled in my chest as my foot slid into a hole I had never seen, in a place I had never been with only a drop left to give, I tipped my love in it sprouted into something more than I ever thought I could even be then flowers budded, reaching every one of my branches and I blossomed.

My Promo Post

What is your writing process like? I began my author journey in 2016. To date, I’ve written four publications: two young adult fantasy novels (Throne of Lies and Untoward Awakening), a mental health based short story (Agoraphobic: Inside Out), and soon to release, a poetry/prose collection (Dear Wallflower). Interestingly, I learned that these various book genres vary drastically in the writing approach. In my experience, the novels have been the most challenging of the bunch; requiring uncountable hours, higher investment cost, and a much more demanding determination ratio. My full-length novels with a word count ranging from 80,000 to 100,000 have always included years of diligence, focus, and a fair share of emotional battles with the imposter syndrome. As a pantser writer, I’ve found that my stories take their own shapes as I dive into the fray. The depth of character arcs and shocking plot twists take form and surprise me as much as the reader. Remember, there is no “right” way to write. So long as empty pages are filled with words to paint a new story, that’s all a writer must do, and it matters none how they got to that necessary end. However, the process for Dear Wallflower, my poetry and prose collection, was unlike any writing venture I’ve taken yet. While poetry set the start of my love to write, I found that much of my struggles with this new book endeavor was found in the visual direction. I’ve always leaned on my words to lift a story, but in this case, I needed a strong aesthetic and theme to back my words. That provided a new layer of consideration, and in the end, was a great new experience in bringing a book alive.

Rating: 4 stars!

This is a good story with characters that can draw you in, and there is so much potential for continuation. There were two reasons I couldn't give this book five stars: There is a cliff hanger, which forces you to wait for the next book to even address any potential closure, (or will the next book be a cliff hanger too?) Secondly, the characters are captivating and the story is good, I felt it could've been just a touch more developed. The premise is unique and excellent, as a fan of paranormal, this is a storyline I've never come across before, and it is completely engaging! There is a little bit of love infused between the characters which leave room for further development in future books, but for now, it is sweeter than anything else. The humans that are involved make for an interesting twist and the way they are woven in lets you use some imagination as you read. All in all, a good read if you don't mind waiting for the next book in the series, which I am anxiously awaiting.

As the car turned down yet another dirt road, the rolling Texas hills came into view. Faye squinted out the car window at the afternoon sunlight, despite her developing headache. Even with her sunglasses and hat on, the burning sun hurt her eyes. Everyone else in the packed minivan hid as far away from the windows as they could, curled up under blankets or coats, but Faye couldn’t help watching the beautiful countryside filled with dandelions and other wild flowers they passed. She pressed her face against the hot glass and smiled at the colorful fields and the deep-green and brown hills. “Sure, great idea. Let’s move to Texas this time, where it’s always sunny and hot and there’s never any shade.” Maddy peeked out from under her jean jacket, which she’d pulled over her head. “Great idea, Dusk. How about we take a vacation to the surface of the sun while we’re at it?” Faye turned away from the window to look at Dusk who was lying in the back of the van with his head on Salome’s lap. A thin blanket covered his face and neck entirely. The contours of his Nordic face cast in the fabric, and his long, tawny-brown dreadlocks peeked out from under it in places. “We don’t have any choice. Essie said it was the best place she could find on short notice.” The blanket moved with his mouth. “Do I have to remind you why we moved in the first place?” “No, I remember. So what? I handled it, but Essie and Tristan opened their big mouths.” “Hey, I didn’t say anything. Essie did. Besides, we were going to have to move eventually, so what’re you complaining about, Maddy doll? Afraid of a little sunny tickle?” Tristan joked from the driver’s seat, wincing slightly when the sun emerged from behind a cloud. “God, I miss the Southwest!” He wore his black cowboy hat, and two layers of sunglasses sat perched on his nose. His chest was bare and most of it exposed to the sun. Faye could see him shaking slightly as he gripped the steering wheel tightly. It was hard to guess what Tristan would do at any point in time, so she hadn’t been too surprised when he’d ripped his shirt off after exchanging places with Dusk for the driver’s seat. The scar on his chest from a bullet wound stood out in the sunlight as he winced again, his arms and stomach tensing.
